Alleging molestation, women labourers gheraoed police station
Nagpur News : The year seems to have begun with women power in the city. On the first day of the year, hundreds of women, working as labourers at cotton market, laid siege at the Ganeshpeth police station on Tuesday morning demanding immediate arrest of some notorious who allegedly passed abusive comments on them and molests them.
The mob alleged that on Tuesday early morning, a gang of around ten armed youths have misbehaved and abused the women labourers working at cotton market. They claimed that when opposed, the youths threatened them at knife point and tried to touch them at inappropriate places publicly and molest them.
Hence, annoyed of the misbehaviour and harassment, the women thronged at the police station and demanded immediate arrest. However, swinging into actions, a police team raided the place and successfully arrested three accused. Search for other accused is underway.
The women claimed that the misbehaviour is a regular affair for them but have avoided so far. “After every alternate day, one or the other woman would get to hear bad comments, abusive words, stares but we tried to avoid them under the fear of losing the job,” said one of the protestors. These women worked at cotton market to unload the transported materials.
She informed that a gang of around ten drunk youths, few of them having arms with them, crossed their limits of eve-teasing and misbehaving on Tuesday and thus forcing them to approach police for help.
“Around 5 am, we were busy with our works when the youth came to us and started passing bad comments on us. Many tried to touch at inappropriate places and when opposed, they threatened us at knife point. They even warned us to inform police,” said other protestor.
The protestors informed that they never informed the harassment to the police, fearing that they would lose the job and also face problems. However, the women lost their patience on Tuesday and complained about the molestation to their contractors who then informed Ganeshpeth police station.
Before police could take any action, the labourers thronged at the police station. The protest continued for around two hours.
Shahrukh Khan, Akbar Shaikh and Pankj Gomase, all resident of Gujarwadi have been arrested. Among the accused, Khan have past records of robbery at many city police stations.
One of the women claimed that it can be seen that the criminal elements do not have any fear of law.
“It only reflects that neither we and nor our daughters are safe in the city,” she added.
