Nagpur News: What seemed to be fatal accident of a homemaker in Barse Nagar, Buddha Vihar, has now turned into yet another tale of domestic abuse in the city.

Thirty five year old Maya Girish Panekar lost her life battling burn injuries in Ward No. 3 of Mayo Hospital, after her Sari caught fire while she was reportedly lighting Diyas and praying in her Barse Nagar residence. Pachpaoli Police had initially registered a case of accidental death.

However, the victim’s father Motiram Hanwate (62), a resident of Katol, filed a police complaint accusing Maya’s husband Girish Panekar and relatives Shantabai  Shyamlal Panekar and Vijeta Panikar of mentally harassing Maya, and also of abusing her physically.  According to Hanwate, his daughter was forced to take her own life when the constant abuse of her in- laws became too much to bear.

Police Sub- inspector Kinnake of Pachpaoli Police Station took note of Hanwate’s complaint, and has registered a case under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 of the IPC (Indian Peal Code).
