Nagpur: A major theft aboard the country’s flagship Vande Bharat Express has raised fresh concerns over passenger security on India’s premium rail services. A 67-year-old woman passenger reportedly lost a purse containing gold and diamond jewellery, cash and important documents worth more than Rs 20.75 lakh while travelling from Nagpur to Pune.

The victim, identified as Anjali Ajay Mudhalkar, a resident of Pune, was travelling on June 10 in Train No. 26102 Vande Bharat Express. She had boarded the train from Ajni railway station and was seated on Seat No. 29 in Coach C-4.

According to the complaint, an unidentified thief allegedly stole her purse from her bag during the journey. The theft went unnoticed until the woman checked her belongings sometime after boarding the train and discovered that the purse had vanished.

The stolen purse reportedly contained Rs 8,000 in cash, identity documents, gold earrings, a necklace, a gold chain, a diamond pendant, a gold mangalsutra and other valuables. The total value of the stolen property has been estimated at approximately Rs 20,75,500.

The incident triggered panic among railway authorities, as reports of a theft involving valuables worth lakhs of rupees surfaced from the highly-publicised semi-high-speed train, which is often projected as one of the safest and most modern rail services in the country.

Following the complaint, the Railway Control Room was alerted, prompting an immediate response from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP). At the next halt, Wardha railway station, RPF personnel questioned the passenger and gathered preliminary details regarding the theft.

Subsequently, a case was registered with the GRP against an unidentified accused under relevant provisions of law. Investigators have launched a probe and are examining CCTV footage from railway stations and the train’s surveillance system to identify the culprit and trace the stolen valuables.

The incident has once again put the spotlight on passenger safety and security of belongings during rail travel. Railway officials acknowledged the seriousness of the case and said all possible angles are being investigated.

GRP officials expressed confidence that the accused would be identified through technical evidence and surveillance footage collected during the investigation.

Meanwhile, railway police have advised passengers to remain vigilant while travelling, keep a close watch on their luggage and valuables, and immediately report any suspicious activity to the RPF or GRP to prevent such incidents.
