Nagpur: In a disturbing incident that has raised serious questions about women’s safety in public spaces, a group of miscreants allegedly harassed and passed obscene remarks at young women preparing for police recruitment examinations in the Telangkhedi area of Nagpur. The incident has triggered widespread outrage among aspirants and renewed concerns over the security of women pursuing careers in law enforcement.
According to information, a large number of young women were engaged in their routine morning fitness and running practice on Hanuman Mandir Road and adjoining areas on Friday when a red car carrying several youths arrived at the spot. Witnesses alleged that the occupants of the vehicle began making lewd comments, passing vulgar remarks and gesturing obscenely at the women trainees.
The shameful act not only disrupted the training session but also created an atmosphere of fear and humiliation among the aspirants, many of whom are preparing to join the police force and serve society.
When some of the women courageously confronted the accused and attempted to stop them, the youths reportedly sped away from the scene in their vehicle. Their actions left the trainees shocked and angered, with several questioning whether women can feel safe even while preparing to wear the uniform and uphold the law.
The incident has sparked resentment among the women candidates, who spend hours every day undergoing rigorous physical training to secure a place in the police force. Many expressed concern that repeated incidents of harassment in public spaces could adversely affect the morale and confidence of female aspirants.
A complaint has been lodged at Gittikhadan Police Station, and the victims have provided police with the vehicle registration number, MH-31-FR-2558, which is expected to play a crucial role in identifying the accused.
Police officials have begun tracing the ownership details of the vehicle through Regional Transport Office (RTO) records. CCTV footage from nearby areas is also being scrutinised to establish the identity of the occupants and facilitate their early arrest.
Investigators believe the vehicle number provided by the women could prove to be a significant lead in cracking the case.
The incident comes at a time when hundreds of young women across Nagpur regularly train in open grounds and public roads in the early hours of the day for recruitment into the police, armed forces and other security services.
The harassment of women striving to join the very institutions responsible for maintaining law and order has drawn sharp criticism from citizens and social activists alike.
Local residents pointed out the irony that young women aspiring to wear the khaki uniform and protect society are themselves being subjected to harassment in public spaces. They described the incident as a matter of grave concern for both society and law-enforcement agencies.
Several women’s organisations and social groups have demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment to send a strong message against crimes targeting women’s dignity and safety. They have warned that if swift and stringent action is not taken, they may launch protests to press for justice.
Citizens have also urged the police administration to intensify patrolling in vulnerable areas and implement special security measures to ensure that women can pursue their training and ambitions without fear, intimidation or harassment.
