Nagpur: A seemingly trivial inquiry over a person’s whereabouts turned violent in Wadi’s Tekdiwadi area, where a group of youths allegedly assaulted a 53-year-old woman and manhandled several residents who intervened to stop the attack. The incident has sparked concern among locals, with allegations that the accused continued to issue threats even after a police complaint was lodged.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on Monday evening near the Birsa Munda statue and Mokshadham premises in Tekdiwadi. The accused, identified as Abbas alias Abu Tayyab Khan, Sonu Vasanik, Soheb Khan and their associates, had arrived in a car while searching for the residence of a local timber yard operator.
During their search, the group allegedly approached a youth named Ajay, who was playing in a nearby ground, and asked him to call a particular person. When Ajay refused to summon someone on behalf of strangers, an argument reportedly broke out.
Police said the accused allegedly began abusing and assaulting the youth. In an attempt to escape the attack, Ajay ran into a nearby house and took shelter. However, the accused allegedly chased him and continued creating a ruckus outside the residence.
As tensions escalated, a 53-year-old woman stepped forward in an effort to protect the youth and defuse the situation. According to the complaint, Abbas alias Abu Tayyab Khan allegedly slapped the woman during the confrontation.
The alleged assault on the woman angered local residents and drew the attention of neighbours, many of whom rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion.
Witnesses claimed that the accused not only used abusive language against those who intervened but also pushed and physically assaulted some of the women and residents who attempted to restore order. The incident reportedly created panic in the neighbourhood and left several residents shaken.
The complainants have further alleged that intimidation did not stop with the incident. According to the police complaint, some of the accused continued to threaten local youths even after the matter was reported to the authorities.
Residents claimed that threatening messages were allegedly sent through mobile phones, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity in the area.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, Wadi Police have registered a case against Abbas alias Abu Tayyab Khan, Sonu Khan, Soheb Khan and Sonu Vasanik under relevant sections of the law.
Police officials said an investigation is underway and appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
Local residents have demanded strict action against the accused, stating that such acts of violence and intimidation cannot be tolerated and must be dealt with firmly to maintain law and order in the area.
