In a tragic incident, a volleyball player died of heart attack while playing a match in Kanhan on Thursday (November 6). The match was part of an annual Inter-Sub Area Volleyball Tournament organized by Kamptee Sub Area of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL). Kamptee Sub Area comes under Nagpur Area of WCL. A pall of gloom descended in WCL and the tournament was cancelled as mark of respect to the player, who has been identified as Vaijnath Shahi.
Earlier, the Inter-Sub Area Volleyball Tournament was inaugurated at New Tekadi Township Volleyball Ground in Kamptee Sub Area by Devendra Prasad, Sub Area Deputy General Manager. Four teams of Nagpur Area participated in the volleyball tournament. The first match was being played between Sillewada and Godegaon teams. Unfortunately, while playing the match, the Godegaon player Vaijnath Shahi suffered a massive cardiac arrest (heart attack) and collapsed on the volleyball court. He died before any medical treatment could be administered to him.
According to information, the deceased Vaijnath Shahi (52) was working in Godegaon Mine of WCL on the post of Munsi (Tripman).
As the news of Vaijnath Shahi’s death while playing the volleyball match reached the organizers, the tournament was cancelled as a respect to the departed soul. Officials from Nagpur Area including Area Personnel Manager V K Singh, Labour Officer Ratneshwar Malik, Area Manager Prasad and office-bearers of Joint Coordination Committee reached the venue.
The last rites of Vaijnath Shahi were performed on the same day (November 6).
