Nagpur: The Orange City witnessed another scorching summer day on Wednesday as temperatures surged sharply, pushing residents indoors and leaving roads sparsely crowded during the afternoon hours. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius, while hot and dry winds added to the discomfort from the morning itself.
The intense heatwave conditions continued across Vidarbha, with the Regional Meteorological Department warning that temperatures may rise further over the next few days. According to the forecast, Vidarbha, Marathwada and parts of central Maharashtra are likely to experience severe heatwave conditions till May 19, with temperatures expected to increase by another 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
While Nagpur battled oppressive heat through most of the day, weather conditions changed dramatically in the evening. Dark clouds developed over several parts of the city after 5.30 pm, followed by strong gusty winds and scattered rainfall. The sudden change brought temporary relief to citizens exhausted by the relentless heat, though humidity levels increased significantly after the showers.
Among Vidarbha districts, Akola recorded the highest temperature at 45.9 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places in the region. Amravati followed closely at 45.8 degrees Celsius, while Wardha registered 45 degrees Celsius.
In Nagpur, the mercury rose by 1.2 degrees compared to Tuesday’s 43 degrees Celsius. The day started with partial cloud cover, but clear skies later allowed direct sunlight to intensify, worsening the heat conditions across the city. Night temperatures also remained unusually high, with the minimum temperature on Tuesday night settling at 28.4 degrees Celsius, adding to residents’ discomfort.
Different parts of the city experienced varying weather conditions during the evening. Areas in East Nagpur, particularly Nandanvan, received brisk rainfall along with strong winds, while localities including Sitabuldi and Civil Lines witnessed only light drizzle.
Though the rainfall was short-lived and uneven, it offered brief respite from the blazing temperatures that continue to grip Nagpur and the larger Vidarbha region.
