University Grants Commission has many schemes for the welfare of university students. Commission also sanctions grants for implementation of schemes. But strangely, in twelfth five-year plan there is deduction in these grants to the extent of 50%. The employees under various schemes will be direct suffers due to the cut that will be implemented with immediate effect. The cut in salaries will be up to 75%. Many will be worst hit because of this scanty provision. Owing to this impractical decision of UGC, many schemes are on the verge of closure.

Backward class students get free coaching for NET and SET examinations. UGC also gives grants for the scheme. Full time employees working under these schemes are working on contractual basis. These employees handle many tasks including coaching, filing applications etc. Under eleventh plan the amount of grant was Rs 35 lakhs. But the same amount under twelfth plan, which commenced on April 1, 2013, has been reduced to 15 lakhs. It is the employees working for the scheme will be hit hard now. Those who were previously working on monthly salary of Rs 12,000/ will be forced to work on salary of Rs 3,000/. It is going to be really difficult to get employees worth the name to work on such peanut of a salary. Thus, the welfare scheme will be there on record only. The deserving students will have to bear the brunt of this one-sided decision of UGC.

Therefore, the employees under the scheme have made a desperate appeal to the university to represent their case before University Grants Commission (UGC) and get them relief they deserve.
