Ambazari LakeNagpur: While as many as 100 trees on the bank of Ambazari Lake have been felled, remaining are also reported to be awaiting their felling. All this is being done to favour some private establishment. Bank without trres would pose threat to the Lake, said Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLC Prakash Gajbhiye.

A couple of days ago, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Mayor Praveen Datke led ‘shramdaan’ in the Ambazari Lake area. The question is being raised as to why Datke chose Ambazari Lake for ‘shramdaan’ while there are other water-tanks in the city which need more attention for their maintenance and upkeep. It is alleged that the ‘shramdaan’ held in Ambazari Lake premises was to favour some private professional establishment. During carrying out of shramdaan, at first instance, the shrubs from the lake were removed, but after some days, the trees of berry and other species were chopped up, marring the beauty of the lake, for which they were deliberately grown there.

Such felling of trees by NMC against the tree-plantation drive of the government at the Centre as well as in the State is beyond the understanding of common man.

Criticizing the undesired act, National Congress Party MLC Prakash Gajbhiye said that a private establishment in front of Ambazari Lake gate is running short of sufficient space for parking, and the NMC is thus providing space inside the park area by felling the trees. If there will be no trees on the bank of the lake how can the soil be held tight on the bank to hold water, he questioned, adding that the bank would soon get eroded, posing threat to the existence of the lake.

The Ambazari Lake Bachao Action Committee has geared up its protest against the illogical drive of tree-felling in the Lake.
