Nagpur: Rail connectivity between Pune and Nagpur, one of Maharashtra’s busiest and most crucial passenger corridors, has taken a severe hit due to ongoing track doubling works on the Daund–Manmad section under Central Railway’s Pune Division. The disruption has resulted in the cancellation of several key trains for as long as 22 days, causing widespread inconvenience to passengers travelling between Vidarbha, Marathwada and other parts of the country, a report in a local Marathi daily said.

The impact of the work underway between Daund and Kashti stations has extended far beyond the Pune-Nagpur route, affecting rail services towards South and North India as well. What has added to commuters’ frustration is the fact that no official press release or public notification has been issued by the Railways regarding these cancellations.

Among the trains cancelled during this period are the Pune-Amravati Express, Amravati-Pune Express, Ajni-Pune Express, Pune-Ajni Humsafar, Ajni-Pune Humsafar and Nagpur-Pune Express. Thousands of passengers who depend on these services for work, education and medical travel have been left scrambling for alternatives.

Railway sources said the disruption is due to pre-non-interlocking and non-interlocking works, which are part of the final phase of the doubling project and are scheduled to continue till January 25. However, it has come to light that even the Nagpur Division was reportedly unaware of the cancellations, raising serious questions about internal coordination within the railway administration.

Passengers are being informally advised to make alternate travel arrangements, but the absence of official communication has led to confusion, last-minute cancellations and overcrowding on other routes.

The Pune-Nagpur rail corridor remains a vital lifeline for Maharashtra, with regular services such as the Pune-Nagpur Express, Pune-Nagpur Humsafar Express and Pune-Nagpur Garib Rath Express playing a key role in long-distance connectivity. The Pune-Nagpur Express, for instance, departs Pune around 6.35 pm and reaches Nagpur at 9.10 am, operating three days a week.

The Pune-Nagpur Humsafar Express, a fully air-conditioned weekly service, covers the roughly 890-km distance, while the Garib Rath Express, an AC three-tier train, runs thrice a week. Additionally, the Pune-Ajni Humsafar Express provides weekly connectivity to Ajni station in Nagpur city.

With multiple trains off the tracks and no clear communication strategy in place, passengers are urging the Railways to improve transparency and coordination, especially when major routes are disrupted for extended periods.
