Nagpur: Acting on a tip-off, the Crime Branch’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) busted a prostitution racket operating in the Kalamna area and arrested a woman agent red-handed, while rescuing a young woman from the flesh trade.
The racket was active in and around the Kalamna vegetable market. The arrested accused has been identified as Mamta Jayant Nagvanshi (34), a resident of Gulmohar Nagar, Kalamna. Police said the accused was herself a former victim, due to which she had developed contacts within the network.
Investigations revealed that Mamta was allegedly luring women and young girls working as daily-wage labourers (hamalis) in the Kalamna vegetable market by exploiting their financial distress, and pushing them into prostitution.
To trap the accused, police deployed a decoy customer and struck a deal for Rs 2,300. During the raid, as the accused arrived with the victim near Payal Daily Needs shop close to Umang Bhavan, the AHTU team caught her red-handed.
A 24-year-old woman, who was working alongside the accused as a labourer in the vegetable market, was safely rescued during the operation.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused had been running the illegal operation in the area for nearly a year. Police seized a mobile phone and cash, with the total value of seized property amounting to Rs 12,300.
The accused and the rescued woman were later handed over to Kalamna police for further legal proceedings. Police have launched a search for other members linked to the racket, and a detailed investigation is currently underway.
