Nagpur: In a bizarre theft case that has stunned Nagpur, two men allegedly sought forgiveness from the deities before breaking open donation boxes at two temples and fleeing with cash. Days later, one suspect landed in hospital after a road accident while trying to escape, and the other was arrested by police using the city’s SIMBA crime analytics system.
The incident took place on the night of July 27 at the Sheetala Mata Temple and Shiv Temple in the Maldhakka area. According to police, the accused broke open the donation boxes and stole cash kept inside.

The entire incident was captured on the temples’ CCTV cameras. Investigators said the footage showed the two men standing before the idols, holding their ears in a traditional gesture of apology, apparently seeking divine forgiveness before carrying out the theft. Moments later, they allegedly broke the locks of the donation boxes and escaped with the cash.
During the investigation, police identified the suspects as Jayneet Chaure and Vansh Meshram, both of whom have previous records of creating public nuisance while under the influence of alcohol.
Police said Jayneet Chaure fled towards Chhattisgarh to hide at a relative’s residence after the theft. However, he reportedly met with a road accident en route, suffered a fractured leg and was admitted to a hospital.
Meanwhile, Nagpur Police used the SIMBA (System for Intelligent Monitoring and Behavioural Analysis) crime detection system to trace and arrest Vansh Meshram from the Jaripatka area.
Investigators said the accused were identified with the help of their existing criminal records and technical analysis through the SIMBA system.
Meshram is currently being interrogated, while a police team has been dispatched to Chhattisgarh to take Chaure into custody after completing the required legal formalities.
Police are also verifying the exact amount of cash stolen from the temple donation boxes and whether the duo was involved in similar thefts elsewhere.
The unusual sequence of events, from the accused seeking forgiveness before committing the crime to one ending up in hospital and the other behind bars, has drawn widespread attention, with police saying the investigation is continuing.
