Nagpur: In an audacious act akin to Taliban terrorists, sand mafia on Tuesday tried to kill a Tehsildar and Nayab Tehsildar by crushing them under a tipper truck. The Nayab Tehsildar saved his life by jumping to other side of the road but the Tehsildar anyhow managed to hang on to the vehicle and was taken for ride for 15 kilometres.

The outrageous incident occurred at a railway crossing near Umred on Nagpur-Gadchiroli Road on Monday.

A squad of Revenue Department led by Umred Tehsildar Pramod Kadam and comprising Nayab Tehsildar Yogesh Shinde and other staff had gone to railway crossing on Umred_Bhivapur Road for taking action against sand mafia and curb sand theft. The squad started checking sand laden vehicles passing through the spot. They signalled a tipper truck driver to stop. However, the driver, instead of stopping, tried to run over the truck on Tehsildar Kadam and Nayab Tehsildar Shinde. Shinde saved his life by jumping other side of road. However, as the tipper truck had slowed down, Tehsildar managed to hang on to the vehicle by stepping on its footrest. Meanwhile, the truck driver accelerated and increased speed of truck. The speeding truck made it impossible for Kadam to jump from the footrest. When the truck slowed down near Uti Shivar (Bhivapur Tehsil), Kadam jumped and saved himself from the life threatening ordeal.

Despite crackdowns by district administration and police department, the sand mafia continues to indulge in illegal acts.

The role of the outlaws is so much deep-rooted that to whatever extent the district administration may go to curb them, it will be a difficult task to do. Cops booked several members of sand mafia under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in an attempt to end a bloody rivalry between sand mafia.
