Nagpur: A 28-year-old man died during treatment after he was allegedly beaten by a mob following a suspected house burglary in Model Mill Society, New Manish Nagar, under Beltarodi Police Station on Tuesday afternoon. His alleged accomplice fled the spot, while police detained three people in connection with the assault.
The deceased has been identified as Sumedh Rajendra Gajbhiye (28), a resident of Narsala. The incident reportedly occurred at around 1:45 pm.

Woman Allegedly Threatened With Knife
According to preliminary information, two youths allegedly entered the residence of 61-year-old Usha Devidas Dharmik at Model Mill Society. One of them allegedly placed a knife near the woman’s neck and attempted to snatch her mangalsutra.
The woman reportedly resisted and raised an alarm. The accused allegedly managed to take only a broken portion of the mangalsutra before fleeing.
Hearing the commotion, the woman’s daughter-in-law came into the hall. The youths allegedly demanded jewellery and cash from her as well. She reportedly went into a room on the pretext of attending to her child, locked the door from inside and alerted her husband and neighbours.
The woman’s son subsequently arrived with friends and neighbours, following which a search for the two youths began in the surrounding area.
Two Youths Allegedly Surrounded Near Two-Wheeler
During the search, residents reportedly spotted Sumedh Gajbhiye and his alleged associate Deepak Patil near a two-wheeler some distance away. Suspecting them of being the youths who had entered the woman’s house, people surrounded them.
A crowd soon gathered and allegedly began assaulting the two men. Beltarodi Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident.
Police detained three people allegedly involved in the assault and took the injured Sumedh into custody. Meanwhile, Deepak Patil reportedly escaped from the spot.
Condition Deteriorates at Police Station
Police took Sumedh to Beltarodi Police Station. When his condition deteriorated, Police Inspector Naikwad reportedly sent him to the Government Medical College and Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Doctors examined him and declared him dead.
News of his death led to tension in the Beltarodi area. A crowd gathered near the police station and the incident site, following which additional police personnel were deployed as a precaution.
Senior Police Officials Reach Spot
Senior police officials, including ACP Narendra Hinware of Ajni Division, Crime Branch ACP Vaibhav Jadhav, DCP Rashmita Rao, Crime Branch DCP Deepak Agrawal, Additional Commissioner of Police Vasant Pardeshi and Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy, reached Beltarodi Police Station with police personnel.
Police have detained three suspects in connection with the alleged mob assault and launched a search for Deepak Patil.
Investigators are examining the entire sequence of events, including the identities of the youths who allegedly entered the house and the circumstances under which the crowd caught and assaulted them. Further investigation is underway.
