Nagpur News: Twenty three students gathered in front of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj (RTM) Nagpur University were gathered into a police vehicle and detained at Gittikhadan Police Station this afternoon.

The students, mainly from Bachelor of Engineering (BE) were temporarily detained and were supposed to have been released within an hour of the detention.

“The students have been detained under Sections 68 and 69 of the Bombay Police Act,” confirmed police officials, “They should be released this evening”. The detention was not under the Criminal Procedure Code as earlier reported.

The students were part of the groups of BE students who have been frequenting RTMNU campus everyday in the hope of respite from the revaluation “no change” controversy. Police bandhobast  has been clearly visible at the campus for the past few days, and students have constantly been denied entry.

Sources state that the police are asking for a written confirmation from the students present that would not approach the RTMNU campus in the near future.

According to sources, the group of students tried to stop an official- looking vehicle at the gates in the hope of an audience with the Vice Chancellor. Thereupon the police, after repeated warnings, detained the students after assuring them that they would be released within one or two hours. The students have been kept in a large hall at the city police headquarters at Takli. They have been provided water and other facilities.

The students were released after 10:00 pm last night.
