Nagpur: A peculiar case of creating a fake Instagram ( a photo sharing social site) account of a class 10th girl in Nagpur has come to light. Whereas fake accounts are not new, this time the incident has brought to the fore the real threat of fake accounts. Morphed pictures of this girl was posted on this fake account. However this is not just an isolated case.

Cyber expert assistant police inspector Vishal Mane reported that some unidentified persons from Andhra Pradesh have been targeting girls and woman on the social media site Instagram. Cyber Cell Complaint (C3 Unit) has been notified of two cases of molestation, where the girls were approached on Instagram by unknown users. Later, the girls realized that some user had created their fake accounts and posted their morphed pictures.

In the latest case, 16-year-old girl, student of standard X, lodged a complaint at Sadar police station against the unknown users. The case was transferred to C3, with API Mane leading the investigations. The survivor had received a friend request from an unknown person, which she had accepted and started chatting too.

Some days later, the survivor’s friends, who had been tagged in some posts, told her that someone had created a fake account on Instagram and was uploading objectionable images with her face. Later, the accused asked the survivor to share some of her real pictures. When she refused to do so, he threatened to continue to defame her with morphed pictures. The survivor then blocked the user immediately.

Mane said the accused must be from Andhra Pradesh, as in an earlier case registered around 10 days ago, cops have tracked down the identity of the accused. However, the other girl later withdrew her complaint. Cops have registered cases and are investigating further.
