Nagpur :As part of its ongoing campaign for equitable access to quality higher education in Vidarbha, a delegation of Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO), Maharashtra North, led by Taiseer Zaid, met Hon’ble Shri Shyamkumar Barve, Member of Parliament (Ramtek) and submitted a memorandum urging the establishment of a multidisciplinary Central University in Vidarbha.
During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the longstanding educational imbalance faced by the region despite its large student population, strategic location, and immense academic potential. The representatives emphasized that while Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, is an important Central University with a specialized focus on Hindi language and literature, Vidarbha still lacks a comprehensive multidisciplinary Central University capable of offering education across science, engineering, medicine, social sciences, law, management, humanities, agriculture, innovation, and emerging technologies.
The delegation stressed that a new Central University would significantly strengthen higher education infrastructure, promote quality research, generate employment, encourage innovation and startups, and reduce the migration of students to other states and metropolitan cities. Such an institution would also support the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by fostering multidisciplinary learning, research excellence, and regional development.
SIO Maharashtra North further pointed out that Nagpur, owing to its central geographical location, excellent rail, road, and air connectivity, and status as the educational hub of eastern Maharashtra, offers an ideal location for establishing the proposed university. The institution would benefit students not only from all eleven districts of Vidarbha but also from neighbouring regions of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.
Along with the demand for a Central University, the delegation also submitted recommendations on comprehensive examination reforms to improve transparency, fairness, and accountability in the higher education examination system.
Hon’ble MP Shri Shyamkumar Barve patiently heard the concerns raised by the delegation and assured them that the matter would be given due consideration and that he would extend support towards raising this important issue at the appropriate forum.
SIO Maharashtra North reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing this demand through constructive dialogue with public representatives, academic stakeholders, civil society, and the wider student community. The organisation believes that establishing a multidisciplinary Central University in Vidarbha is not merely an educational necessity but a crucial step towards ensuring balanced regional development and expanding opportunities for future generations.
