Nagpur News: A disgraceful development has come to the fore concerning the state of affairs of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The all important post of Assistant Commissioner, reserved for Adivasi (ST) category is vacant since past nine years thus exposing the careless attitude of NMC towards betterment of Adivasis.

It may be recalled the NMC had published an advertisement for filling up of 13 posts of Assistant Commissioners in 2004. The posts included 7 posts for Open Category, 2 for Other Backward Classes, 1 for Scheduled Caste, 1 for Nomadic Tribe and 1 for Scheduled Tribe. Accordingly, all the posts were filled up except the post reserved for Scheduled Tribe (Adivasi) as no qualified candidate for the post was found by the NMC.

However, according to rules and regulations, the post should have been filled up within three years. The NMC Administration was expected to reduce the qualification criterion for the post and send a proposal to NMC General Meeting in this regard. However, NMC Administration failed to shorten the qualifications and also did not send any proposal to the General Meeting. The outcome is that the chair of the Assistant Commissioner is crying for a suitable candidate since past nine years. The responsibility of finding a qualified candidate for the post has been given to the Assistant Commissioner of General Administrative Department.

Now, the surprising aspect of this state of affairs is how an Assistant Commissioner is bestowed upon the responsibility of filling up the post of Assistant Commissioner itself. Really surprising, and bewildering, too.
