Nagpur: Tension prevailed outside the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Nagpur after leaders and workers of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) staged a protest alleging inaction against overloaded vehicles.
The demonstration was led by party leader Nitin Tiwari, who accused the RTO authorities of failing to curb violations despite the increasing number of road accidents linked to overloading. Protesters raised slogans and gheraoed the office, demanding strict enforcement of transport rules.
Tiwari alleged that unchecked overloading not only poses a serious threat to public safety but also leads to significant revenue losses for the government, running into crores of rupees. He further levelled serious allegations of negligence and corruption against RTO officials, claiming that deliberate inaction was allowing violators to operate freely.
Drawing a comparison, Tiwari pointed out that while the police have taken stringent action against sand mafias under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), similar strict measures are not being implemented by the RTO against transport offenders. He questioned the apparent disparity in enforcement and demanded accountability from the department.
The protesters warned that if immediate corrective steps are not taken to address the issue, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days. They also called for a transparent crackdown on overloaded vehicles and stricter monitoring mechanisms to prevent accidents and revenue leakage.
Officials from the RTO have not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations, but sources indicated that enforcement drives may be reviewed in light of the protest.
