Nagpur: Shiv Sena group leader Kishor Kumeriya strongly condemned Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for constructing an elevated service reservoir (ESR) or overhead water tank, in a playground at Pawansut Nagar in his ward no. 28. Though in alliance at the state and central, the Shiv Sena leader alleged the ruling BJP was biased against it in NMC. Kumeriya said the tank has been constructed on the playground despite regular complaints from him.

“NMC is executing water supply project under Atal Mission For Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Scheme. A playground in my ward was selected for construction of tank under the project. I requested NMC to change the location to nearby locality, where there was enough space.”

“I also took up the issue with civic chief. But the other corporators from the same ward made it a political issue. They wanted the tank in the same playground. Now, the works on the tank have been started. Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) had gifted many playgrounds to institutions for commercial purposes. Now, we are left with very few playgrounds. We can never purchase more playgrounds but could have shifted the location of the tank,” he said. In ward no. 28, two out of the four corporators are from Sena and remaining two from BJP.

One of the BJP corporators Vijay Zelke is chairman of water works consultative committee. Later, Kumeriya told TOI NMC administration did not even pay heed to directives of union minister Nitin Gadkari. “I met Gadkari and informed him about the case. Gadkari directed the civic chief to shift the tank but nothing happened. People are using the area for walking and playing. But the other corporators wanted the tank in the playground since Sena and some other organizations were holding their events in it,” he said.
