‘Save Amrai’ Campaign Cleans Historic Sonagaon Site, Citizens Remove 10 Sacks of Waste in Nagpur

Nagpur: Residents and morning walkers from the Hanuman Nagar area in Nagpur have launched a “Save Amrai” campaign to restore and protect the historic 300-year-old Bhosale-era Amrai and well located at Sonegaon.

Around 20 youngsters and senior citizens came together on Saturday to clean the Hanuman Temple and nearby heritage well area, collecting nearly 10 sacks filled with liquor bottles, beer bottles, plastic waste, cigarette packets, cake boxes and other garbage dumped in the scenic spot.

Members of the newly formed “Save Amrai” group said the area has become a frequent hangout spot for youngsters and anti-social elements due to its isolated and natural surroundings. While many visit the place to celebrate birthdays and gatherings, large amounts of waste are left behind, damaging the historic environment.

Residents said water from the well would later be used to maintain the surrounding greenery and newly planted mango trees.

The “Save Amrai” group has appealed to visitors and youngsters to avoid littering the area and carry waste disposal bags to help maintain the cleanliness and heritage of the natural site.
