NAGPUR: A 38-year-old man associated with the sand trade was allegedly murdered in Nagpur’s Tahsil police station area, triggering alarm in the city. The man was found lying in a blood-soaked condition at a tea stall in front of Kasar Bhavan, near the Itwari post office, on Sunday morning. He was taken to Mayo Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead after examination.
The deceased was identified as Manish Chandrashekhar Mohite (38), a resident of Mahal.
Police launched an investigation and, based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s brother, detained and arrested the three youths who had been with him. The accused were identified as Nikhil Chavan, Kunal Jhade and Vinay Pauniker. According to police, Nikhil and Kunal have previous criminal records. Information has also emerged that some cases had been registered against Manish.

Four youths travelled on two Activas
According to the police investigation, Manish was with his acquaintances Nikhil, Kunal and Vinay on Saturday night. At around 8.30 p.m., Manish called his brother Roshan to ask about the vehicle keys. Around 10.30 p.m., he called again and asked for money.
Manish then asked his brother to meet him at the White House Bar in Jhanda Chowk. When Roshan arrived, he found Manish and Nikhil drinking. Kunal and Vinay arrived a short while later, and all four drank together. Manish then bought a bottle of liquor, after which the four left the bar.
Manish and Nikhil left on one Activa, while Kunal and Vinay travelled on another. Manish did not return home until late at night, prompting his family to try to contact him. On the phone, Manish said he was near Tajnekar Sculptor’s shop in the Chitaroli area. Police are investigating the circumstances in which contact with him was subsequently lost.
Grisly details emerge in the morning
The case took a serious turn on Sunday morning when Manish was found in a blood-soaked condition near the tea stall. He had sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to Mayo Hospital, but doctors declared him dead.
After learning of the incident, Sub-Inspector Madhukar Kathoke of Crime Branch Unit 3 contacted the deceased’s family. At around 9 a.m., he went to the home of Roshan Mohite and asked about Manish. The family was then informed that Manish had been seriously attacked and had died in the hospital.
Bloodstained stones found near tea stall
During an inspection of the scene, police reportedly found bloodstained stones near the tea stall, raising the possibility that Manish was attacked with stones. However, the weapon used in the killing and the full circumstances of the attack remain under investigation.
Tea-stall operator Amit Pauniker said local residents informed him about the incident in the morning. Neighbour Suresh Pathrabe arrived with some people and told him about the incident at the stall. Manish’s brother Roshan subsequently filed a complaint at Tahsil police station.
Police probing possible financial dispute
Manish was involved in the sand business and reportedly operated the business with Gotu Mohite of Tumsar. Police are currently investigating financial transactions or a money dispute as a possible motive. The actual motive, however, has not yet been established.
Police are trying to determine where the four youths went after leaving the bar on Saturday night, what led to the dispute between them and who took Manish to the tea stall. CCTV footage from cameras in the area is being examined to piece together the sequence of events.
Crime Branch and Tahsil police intensify investigation
Given the seriousness of the case, the Crime Branch team has joined the Tahsil police in the investigation. The three arrested accused are being questioned to establish the sequence of events linked to the killing. Police are also examining whether the incident resulted from a sudden dispute or whether the murder had been planned in advance.
All three accused remain in police custody and are being questioned. Police said the motive and other aspects of the case are likely to become clear as the investigation progresses.
