Nagpur: In what appears to be a glaring example of administrative negligence and academic apathy, students of the Bachelor of Arts-Mass Communication (BAMC) course at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) continue to suffer because of fundamental errors printed on their degree certificates. Despite repeated complaints and assurances from university authorities, the mistakes remain uncorrected, jeopardising students’ prospects for higher education and exposing serious flaws in the university’s examination and certification system.
The controversy revolves around the BAMC course run by Dhanwate National College (DNC), which was the first institution affiliated to RTMNU to introduce the three-year programme on an annual pattern in 2015. However, from the very beginning, the university allegedly failed to issue degree certificates with the correct nomenclature.
According to DNC officials, RTMNU’s examination section consistently printed the title “Degree of Bachelor of Mass Communication (BMC)” instead of the officially approved Bachelor of Arts-Mass Communication (BAMC). The error, students say, is not merely technical but strikes at the very identity and validity of the qualification.
Adding to the confusion, the university reportedly printed the wrong faculty on the degree certificates. While the BAMC programme was initially placed under the Faculty of Social Sciences and later shifted to the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, the certificates issued to students mention the Faculty of Humanities, creating a mismatch between the academic records and the actual course structure.
The issue has become particularly severe for students of the 2024 batch, many of whom sought admission to postgraduate programmes at other universities and institutions. During document verification, several institutions reportedly pointed out the discrepancies, leaving students struggling to explain why their degree certificates carry an incorrect course title and faculty designation.
Students allege that their ordeal began with an extraordinary delay in receiving their academic documents. Despite completing the course, they reportedly received their original marksheets and degree certificates only in April 2025, nearly a year after the results were declared. To their shock, the documents contained glaring errors.
After discovering the mistakes, several students returned the certificates and sought corrections. According to them, university officials assured that the issue would be resolved within a few days. However, more than a year later, the corrections are still pending, forcing students to make repeated visits to university offices without any concrete resolution.
Frustration among students recently spilled onto the streets when one affected student highlighted the issue during a public protest at Samvidhan Square. Amid demonstrations over national education-related controversies, the student drew attention to RTMNU’s alleged incompetence by carrying a placard stating, “Meri degree pe degree ka hi naam galat hai” (Even the name on my degree is wrong).
The incident has reignited questions about the functioning of RTMNU’s examination and certification machinery. Students argue that while universities are expected to uphold academic credibility and accuracy, RTMNU has failed to correct even basic details on official documents that determine their academic and professional future.
Ironically, university officials claimed they had not received any formal complaint regarding the issue. They maintained that corrections would be carried out if students approached the examination section. However, DNC authorities strongly disputed this claim, stating that the college has repeatedly written to the university seeking rectification of the errors, but every batch of degrees continues to be issued with the same mistakes.
Students further pointed out inconsistencies even within their marksheets. While first-year marksheets correctly mention the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, the second and third-year marksheets allegedly identify the course under the Faculty of Humanities, creating further confusion during admissions and verification processes.
The continuing controversy has exposed what critics describe as a disturbing lack of accountability within the university administration. With students bearing the consequences of clerical and administrative lapses for years, questions are now being raised over how such fundamental errors could persist despite repeated complaints from both students and the affiliated college.
For many affected graduates, the issue is no longer merely about correcting a certificate. It has become a test of whether one of the region’s premier universities can take responsibility for its mistakes and protect the academic interests of its students.
