Nagpur: In a startling case highlighting the dangers of blind faith and superstition, a 73-year-old woman was robbed of gold jewellery worth Rs 3.75 lakh by two conmen who convinced her that she would receive divine blessings and financial prosperity if she followed their instructions.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening near Jaitwan Buddha Vihar in the Jaripatka area of Nagpur. The victim, identified as Shobha Damodhar Gajbhiye (73), a resident of New Indora, was walking along a public road when she was approached by two unidentified men, both believed to be between 40 and 45 years of age.
According to the complaint lodged with Jaripatka Police, the duo allegedly acted in a coordinated manner to gain the elderly woman’s confidence. One of the men first engaged her in conversation on the pretext of asking for an address. While she was distracted, the second man began speaking about luck, fortune and financial gains.
The accused allegedly told the woman that if she walked 21 steps forward, Goddess Lakshmi would bless her with prosperity and she would soon experience a financial windfall. To make the ritual appear convincing, they persuaded her to remove and hand over her gold ornaments for safekeeping before performing the act.
Trusting their words and influenced by the promise of wealth and good fortune, the woman removed her jewellery, valued at approximately Rs 3.75 lakh, and handed it over to the men. She then walked 21 steps ahead as instructed.
However, when she turned back moments later, both men had vanished along with her jewellery. Realising that she had been deceived, the shocked woman approached the police and lodged a complaint.
Based on her statement, Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Khutwal of Jaripatka Police Station registered a case against the two unidentified accused under Sections 318(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to cheating and common intention. An investigation has been launched to trace the suspects.
Police officials suspect that the accused may be part of a gang that specifically targets elderly citizens by exploiting religious beliefs, superstition and promises of miraculous financial gains. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and gathering intelligence to identify the culprits.
Following the incident, Nagpur Police issued a public advisory urging citizens not to fall prey to individuals claiming they can bring sudden wealth, double money, remove bad luck or provide supernatural blessings in exchange for valuables.
Police have appealed to anyone who may have been cheated in a similar manner to immediately contact the nearest police station and report the incident.
The case serves as a reminder that fraudsters often exploit faith and emotions to target unsuspecting victims, particularly senior citizens, and that caution is essential when dealing with strangers making extraordinary promises of wealth or divine intervention.
