Research on effective drug on cancer with reach to poorest is need of hour: Gadkari

Two-day International Cancer Congress-2016 at Hotel Centre Point opened by the Union Surface Transport and Shipping Minister.

: Union Surface Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday opened the International Cancer Congress-2016 at Hotel Centre Point. “The number of cancer patients is increasing in the country. Research on an effective medicine for treating the disease with reach to the poorest of poor is need of the hour and for extending all the facilities to the patients, more and more organizations should come forward,” Gadkari said in his inaugural address. Other dignitaries seated on the dais include Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Mayor Pravin Datke, Chief Coordinator of Conference and Chairman of Health Care Global Dr Ajay Mehta, Dr Dilip Rode, Dr Rajesh Badve, Dr Yurvesh Parikh, Dr Suchitra Mehta and others.

The Union Minister on the occasion honoured five eminent doctors with Life Time Achievement Awards for their outstanding contribution at national as well as international levels. Padma Bhushan Dr Praful B Desai (Surgical Oncologist and former Director Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai), Padma Bhushan Dr Suresh H Adwani (Medical Oncologist ,Director Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai), Dr Anita Borges (Surgical Onco Pathologist and Director SRL Diagnostic, Mumbai), Dr Harish Kulkarni (Radiation Oncologist and former Director, RST Cancer Hospital, Nagpur) and Dr C Palanivelu (Minimally Invasive Surgical Oncologist and Chairman GEM Hospital and Research Centre, Coimbatore were conferred with the prestigious award.

At the outset, Dr Ajay Mehta made the welcome speech and also outlined the programmes to be conducted during the 2-day International Cancer Congress-2016. He said ten renowned institutions such as Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO), Association of Radiation Oncologist Of India (AROI), Indian Society of Medical & Pediatric Oncology (ISMPO),Indian Co-operative Oncology Network (ICON), Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI), Indian Cancer Society (ICS), Vidarbha Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists (VAPM)), Breast Cancer Foundation India (BCFI), Indian Association of Hyperthermia Oncology and Medicine (IAHOM) and Cancer Care India and over 1000 representative are participating in the conference. The Conference has been organized jointly by Health Care Global and Nagpur Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Dr Mehta said.
