Nagpur: God could not be everywhere so he made mother, it is said.

In India we have an age old custom of blessing any newly wed woman with the exhortion ” sapta putra saughagyavati bhav!” (May you be blessed with seven sons.)

Well, for Nagpur based octogenarian Sunanda Devi both did not apply. She was the proud mother of four sons and must have lived her life thinking her future was secure. But once her husband Dandatra Sharma passed away a few years ago times changed for her. She began keeping unwell and required constant medical care. The son she used to live with, her eldest son Sudhir Raj Sharma, working with Reserve Bank of India got fed up of looking after her. His younger brothers did not want to take on the ‘burden’ of the mother either.

So Sudhir thought up a novel scheme of ‘taking care of the problem’.

He took his old and frail mother by train to far away Nalbari in Assam and ditched her just outside the station. Making some excuse of having to go back to the station, he returned back, leaving her stranded.

What must have gone through the mother’s mind as she waited for the son to return no one can imagine! Her anxiety, her agony, her panic… no one will know.

Finally, some strangers on the road realized her predicament and informed a local Social worker Mujibur Rehman, who runs an old age home called Shanti Nivas.

Mujiber took Sunanda Devi for a medical check up first and then brought her to Shanti Nivas, where she is safe and secure now. Though we are sure, heart broken.

The story was carried by a local Hindi paper where we at Nagpur Today spotted it.

Any one in Nagpur knows any of her sons???

Will someone remind them of their ‘duty’ towards a lady who brought them into this world?!
