Nagpur: In a major development in the Pune hospital bomb-like object case, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has detained a suspect whose trail reportedly extended to Nagpur. The action was carried out at Pulgaon railway station in Wardha district while the suspect was travelling towards Nagpur on the Shalimar Express.
The detained suspect has been identified as Shivaji Rathod, a resident of the Manjari area in Pune. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team of Pune ATS and Nagpur ATS laid a trap and took him into custody. Following the operation, the suspect was brought to Nagpur for further interrogation.
A few days ago, a suspicious low-intensity explosive device was found inside the washroom of Usha Kiran Hospital in Pune’s Hadapsar area, triggering panic in the locality. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) immediately reached the spot and safely defused the object. No casualties were reported in the incident.
During the investigation, ATS officials reportedly recovered an empty timer box from the suspect’s shop. Investigators suspect that the box may have been intended for use in the preparation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Authorities are now probing whether more individuals were involved in the case. Pune Police, the Crime Branch, and Maharashtra ATS are jointly investigating the matter, including the source of the explosives and the possibility of a larger conspiracy.
