Nagpur: In a unique initiative blending history, art and philately, the Department of Posts on Monday released three special picture postcards showcasing some of Nagpur’s treasured cultural artefacts, turning the spotlight on the city’s rich and often overlooked heritage.

The special release ceremony was organised at the Central Museum on the occasion of International Museum Day, with the objective of promoting awareness about preservation of regional history, architecture and artistic legacy through the timeless medium of postcards.

The newly launched picture postcards capture three iconic treasures associated with Nagpur’s cultural landscape, each carrying a story deeply rooted in history and craftsmanship.

One of the postcards features Niranjani, a celebrated painting by renowned 20th-century Indian artist Sawlaram Laxman Haldankar, an alumnus of the prestigious Sir J J School of Art. Known for his mastery over light and realism, Haldankar’s work remains an important chapter in Indian classical art traditions.

Another postcard showcases a rare 18th-century Double Pistol Dagger, popularly known as the “Pistol Katyar,” an extraordinary fusion of a traditional Indian punch dagger with twin firearm barrels. Considered a rare specimen of weapon craftsmanship from the pre-modern era, the artefact also became the central theme of the museum event.

The third postcard depicts a painting of the historic Ajab Bangla, the heritage structure that presently houses the Central Museum and stands as one of Nagpur’s enduring architectural landmarks.

Postal officials said the initiative received an enthusiastic response from heritage lovers, collectors and philately enthusiasts across the country. The demand for the commemorative postcards reportedly began pouring in immediately after the release, with orders being placed from different States through e-money orders.

Officials believe the initiative will not only popularise Nagpur’s historical and artistic identity but also encourage younger generations to reconnect with museums and regional heritage through creative documentation.

The picture postcards, designed as both collectible memorabilia and educational artefacts, are currently available for public purchase at the Nagpur General Post Office (GPO).

Senior officials and dignitaries present during the programme included Sudhir Jakhere, Director Postal Services (Nagpur Region); Prasunna Reddy, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Nagpur City Division; Mayuresh Khadake, Curator of Central Museum; and CM Fellow Vedant Pathak.

The event served as a reminder that even in the digital age, postcards continue to remain powerful carriers of memory, culture and history, preserving stories of the past while travelling into the future.
