What initially appeared to be a blind case after a midnight shooting at a corporator’s house has been cracked by Nagpur Police. Using conventional investigation methods along with the crime branch, cyber cell, forensic examination, CCTV footage and technical analysis, police detained seven suspected accused from Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.
Police examined footage from around 500 CCTV cameras, traced the suspects’ movements, analysed mobile and technical data, and verified financial transactions and digital conversations. In recognition of the investigation, senior police officers have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for the concerned crime branch team.
Investigation began from scratch
The shooting took place around midnight on August 26 at a corporator’s house in Shravan Nagar, in the Wathoda Layout area. The occupants noticed the incident after hearing the sound of gunfire, and glass in the gallery was damaged. CCTV footage from the scene showed two people travelling on a moped, with the person riding pillion firing towards the house.

The identities of the people seen in the footage were not initially clear, making the case challenging for police. Investigators examined the suspected route from the scene, combined footage from several cameras and created a chain tracking the suspects’ movements.
CCTV trail led police to suspects
Police examined hundreds of CCTV recordings from across the city and along the relevant routes, which helped them trace the suspected vehicle. Technical investigation then provided information about the suspects’ movements, contacts and possible locations.
Artificial intelligence was also used during the investigation. Detailed analysis of multiple recordings helped investigators connect the movements of the suspected individuals and vehicles, bringing them closer to the accused.
Ankush allegedly fired, Rishabh rode the Activa
According to information that emerged during the investigation, Ankush Tumsakar allegedly opened fire, while Rishabh Nagdeve was riding the Activa used in the crime.
Investigators found that 46 cases had previously been registered against Ankush Tumsakar and 14 against Rishabh Nagdeve. Police are also conducting a detailed investigation into the accused persons’ criminal backgrounds.
Rs 50,000 transaction under scrutiny
Police have also found an important financial lead in the case. The investigation revealed a transaction of Rs 50,000 from Amit Thakre’s account. Police are investigating at whose direction the transaction was made, whether it was connected to the shooting conspiracy and how the money was used.
WhatsApp chats and digital evidence examined
Some WhatsApp chats and digital conversations have also emerged during the investigation. The cyber team is examining how the accused were in contact with one another and whom they contacted before and after the shooting.
Police are verifying the roles of the accused by compiling mobile locations, call details, digital transactions and other technical evidence.
Suspected drug-related motive
The exact motive behind the shooting has not yet been fully established. However, a key line of inquiry suggests that the accused suspected the corporator was providing police with information about drug transactions.
Police are investigating whether the corporator was targeted because of this suspicion. The real motive and the full nature of the conspiracy are expected to become clear only after the alleged mastermind is arrested.
Truck angle under investigation
Police are also conducting a separate investigation into a possible truck angle. They are collecting information about the movements of suspected vehicles before and after the incident, the accused persons’ contacts and any possible assistance they received.
Alleged mastermind and a woman remain absconding
The main accused in the case is still absconding, and police teams are searching for him. Investigators also suspect the involvement of a woman, who is reportedly absconding as well. Police believe the full conspiracy will be uncovered after the absconding accused and other suspected persons are taken into custody.
Process for MCOCA action initiated
Considering the accused persons’ criminal backgrounds and the nature of the case, police have reportedly begun the process of initiating action under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
Crime branch team rewarded
Despite having no concrete identification of the accused at the outset, the crime branch team traced them using CCTV footage, technical investigation, cyber analysis and forensic evidence. The team extended the investigation to Gujarat and Chhattisgarh and detained seven suspects.
Taking note of the notable investigation, senior police officers have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for the concerned crime branch team. The team played a significant role in cracking the blind case.
The search for the absconding main accused continues. His arrest is expected to help establish who ordered the shooting, who was behind the financial transaction, why the corporator was targeted and who else was involved in the conspiracy.
