Nagpur: In a bid to ease traffic congestion, curb pollution, and reduce accident risks, the Nagpur Traffic Police have announced a major restriction on private travel buses within city limits. From August 13 to September 12, 2025, private travel buses will not be allowed to park, pick up, or drop passengers on roads within the Inner Ring Road between 8 am and 10 pm.
Congestion and pollution concerns
Nagpur, with a population of nearly 30 lakh, has over 20 lakh two-wheelers and 5 lakh four-wheelers on its roads. Ongoing development works and narrow road widths have worsened traffic jams, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
The problem is aggravated at key intersections, including CA Road, Vijay Talkies Square, Cotton Market Square, Variety Square, Rahate Colony Square, Ravi Nagar Square, Dighori Square, and Automotive Square, where unauthorised pick-up and drop activities by private buses add to traffic snarls, air pollution, and noise pollution.
Heavy bus movement in the city
According to traffic police data:
• 642 buses operate via Wardha Road towards Wardha, Yavatmal, Chandrapur
• 190 buses operate via Amravati Road towards Amravati, Pune, Nashik
• 78 buses operate via Chhindwara Road
• 296 buses operate via Jabalpur Road towards Bhopal, Indore
• 92 buses operate via Bhandara Road towards Gondia, Chhattisgarh
• 308 buses operate via Umred Road towards Gadchiroli
Most of these operators do not have authorised parking facilities. Stopping in the middle of roads for pick-up or drop, combined with the large turning radius of buses, increases the risk of accidents.
Only buses with dedicated parking allowed
Only travel operators with their own authorised parking areas will be allowed to pick up or drop passengers from those premises. All others must completely avoid halting within the Inner Ring Road area.
Exemptions
The ban will not apply to:
1. State Transport (ST) buses
2. MIHAN and MIDC staff buses (with permission)
3. Wedding or private event buses (with permission)
4. Ambulances, emergency services, and school buses
5. Senior citizen, women-special, and temple-darshan buses
Penalty provisions
Violators will face action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Bus operators have been given seven days to arrange new pick-up and drop locations and inform passengers of alternative points.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani has appealed for public cooperation, stating, “Ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow in the city is a shared responsibility.”
