Nagpur: In a chilling instance of growing criminal intimidation, a man allegedly threatened a family in the Takiya Diwan Shah locality under Tehsil police station limits, demanding a monthly extortion payment of Rs 10,000 in exchange for allowing them to live peacefully in the neighbourhood. The accused allegedly threatened to murder the complainant’s son if the family failed to pay the money.
The accused has been identified as Khatib Ansari Gafur Ansari, a resident of the same locality. The complainant, Syed Asif Ali, also lives in Takiya Diwan Shah.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly has a criminal background and is known for picking fights with residents and intimidating people in the locality.
The harassment reportedly escalated on the night of October 30, when the accused allegedly confronted the complainant’s elder son and issued a blunt ultimatum: pay Rs 10,000 every month if the family wished to continue living in the neighbourhood, or face fatal consequences.
The accused allegedly followed up on the threat on November 2 by contacting Asif Ali over the telephone and demanding the monthly payment. He reportedly threatened to kill the complainant’s son if the extortion demand was not met.
Alarmed by the repeated threats and fearing for his family’s safety, Asif Ali approached Tehsil police station and lodged a formal complaint.
Acting on the complaint, the police registered an offence against Khatib Ansari and arrested him. Further investigation is underway to establish whether the accused had made similar extortion demands to other residents of the locality.
