Nagpur’s renowned and one pf the most trusted healthcare institutes Orange City Hospital has achieved another feat by making a 65 year old woman free from uterine cancer. Surprisingly, no further treatment is required on her part.

The morbidly obese post menopausal woman with complain of bleeding per vagina for last 10 months came to OPD. After thorough examination, ultrasonography and confirmed by CT scan, a large mass within the uterus was reported.

The patient also had several underlying comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension. She was also being medicated for pericardial TB for the past four months and suffered from obstructive sleep apnoea which diminished lung function.

With innumerable high-risk factors patient posted for surgery with high-risk consent. On preanesthetic check-up, it was concluded that patient was unfit for general anaesthesia and thus to be operated under regional anaesthesia.
Dr Mayoor Daigavane, laparoscopic and Gynaec-Oncosurgeon performed the risky procedure, wherein the Uterus was 4 to 5 times the size of normal. Uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and pelvic lymph nodes were all removed. The complex surgery was uneventful.

Postoperatively the patient was well managed in Intensive care unit as she continued to have blood pressure above 200. Histopathology came out to be uterine cancer (endometrial stromal cancer) confined to uterus.
Patient was in the ICU for two days post surgery and then shifted to wards for four days before being discharged. The patient is cancer free and no further treatment needed.

Senior Consultant Gynecologist, Dr. Bindu Marar highlighted the importance of taking seriously any irregular bleeding for women above 40 yrs of age and after menopause. Such case should be evaluated by the gynaecologist to rule out cancer. Obese women with diabetes, hypertension and irregular bleeding should be alert as these women have more tendency of uterine cancer. Endometrial cancer is more likely to develop in women with a family history of breast or endometrial cancer.

Dr. Usha Nair, Managing Director, stated that people generally opt for alternative medicines for bleeding and white discharge per vagina. Valuable time and money is wasted on this and patient land up in OPD in advanced stage of cancer where treatment and chances of survival gets hard.
