Nagpur: A violent territorial clash between two leopards at the Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park on Sunday left one animal dead and another seriously injured, once again raising concerns over the zoo’s security arrangements and the recurring intrusion of wild animals into safari enclosures.

According to officials, zoo staff noticed two leopards engaged in a fierce fight during a routine inspection on Sunday afternoon. Despite efforts to intervene and control the situation, the confrontation turned deadly. One leopard succumbed to its injuries on the spot, while the other sustained severe wounds and is currently undergoing treatment under the supervision of expert veterinarians.

Preliminary investigations suggest that one of the leopards may have entered the safari enclosure from the adjoining forest area. Wildlife officials suspect the clash was triggered by a territorial dispute after the intruding leopard entered the established territory of another male leopard housed within the safari.

The incident has sparked fresh questions over the effectiveness of security measures at the international-standard zoological park, where similar breaches have been reported in the past.

Officials recalled that a previous incident involved an outside leopard entering the safari area and killing a resident leopard. In another case, a wild leopard reportedly infiltrated the herbivore safari zone and preyed upon several deer. The recurrence of such incidents has prompted concerns among wildlife experts and conservationists about possible loopholes in the park’s perimeter protection system.

The Gorewada zoo has separate safari zones for leopards, tigers, bears and herbivorous animals, each secured with dedicated fencing and protective barriers designed to prevent inter-species movement. However, experts believe that the safeguards meant to prevent wild animals from entering the safari complex from surrounding forest areas may not be adequate.

Following Sunday’s incident, zoo authorities launched an extensive inquiry to determine how the suspected intruding leopard gained access to the enclosure. Drone cameras and other technological resources are being used to inspect the area and identify any gaps in fencing or surveillance systems.

The injured leopard continues to receive medical care, while officials monitor its condition closely.

The latest incident, reportedly the third such case involving wildlife intrusion into safari zones, has intensified scrutiny of the zoo administration’s security management. Wildlife experts have warned that unless preventive measures are strengthened, such breaches could continue to endanger animals and potentially raise concerns regarding visitor safety in the future.

The tragic death of the leopard has once again highlighted the urgent need to reinforce the security barrier between the surrounding forest ecosystem and the safari enclosures at Gorewada, one of central India’s premier wildlife attractions.
