Nagpur: With the recent decision of the State Cabinet to increase the seats of elected Corporators, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) House strength will rise to 156 Corporators from the present 151, a rise of five seats. However, there is no change in nominated members, who would continue to be 5 only.

Earlier, the minimum number of Corporators in a Municipal Corporation was 65 and the maximum 175. But in view of manifold increase in the population of cities and towns, and the need to expedite development works, the State Cabinet has increased the minimum number of Corporators to 17% from 65 earlier to 76.

The State Government said though the 2021 Census is yet incomplete, there is no denying fact about the rise in population. Hence, for proper representation, there is a need to increase the number of wards and it would provide more number of aspirants to test their luck at the hustings. The Cabinet meeting held at Mumbai approved the proposal of Urban Development Department (UDD) about increase in seats of elected Corporators. There is no change in nominated members, who would continue to be 5 only.

The decision would affect all the local bodies that are going to poll in the next six months. Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) Government continues to spring one surprise after another. The much-anticipated single ward representation system for NMC was rescinded and converted into three-member Prabhag giving jolt to many hopefuls. Now, just as parties were getting into election mode the fresh change in representation now needs fresh configuration of the political strategy. As per civic officials, now the number of wards in NMC House would go upto 52.

Similarly now there will be uniform representation in each Prabhag, each having three corporators as total 156 members are to be elected to the new House. The elections to NMC are likely to be held some time in the last week of January or first week of February. For NMC the increase in the number of corporators does not spell any big trouble as the present Town Hall building at Mahal can easily accommodate increased strength. The total number of corporators in civic House would be 161, including five nominated members.
