NMC’s Heat Action Plan earns national recognition at NCDC workshop

Nagpur: In a significant achievement for urban public health planning, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Heat Action Plan for 2026–27 has been showcased as a model “best practice” at a national-level workshop organised by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in New Delhi.

The one-day workshop, focused on “Heatstroke Prevention Action Plan,” was conducted jointly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health, and the World Bank. The event brought together public health experts and municipal representatives from across the country.

Representing Nagpur, Medical Health Officer Dr. Deepak Selokar delivered a detailed and impactful presentation on the city’s Heat Action Plan, highlighting preventive strategies, early warning systems, and coordinated response mechanisms to tackle extreme heat conditions. The presentation drew appreciation from organisers for its structured approach and practical implementation.

As part of the workshop’s hands-on sessions, public health expert Dr. Mithun Kherde and administrative officer Dr. Sonal Sanghi from the Municipal Surveillance Unit (MSU) presented a focused framework on “Risk Communication and Community Engagement for Heatstroke Prevention.” Their session emphasised the importance of public awareness, timely communication, and community participation in reducing heat-related risks.

The recognition at the national platform marks a major endorsement of Nagpur’s proactive efforts in combating heat-related health challenges. Officials said the city’s approach is now being seen as a model for replication by other urban bodies across India.

The workshop featured guidance from several prominent experts, including Dr. Ranjan Das, Director of NCDC; Rajesh Jammi, Health Specialist at the World Bank; Dr. Himanshu Chauhan, Additional Director and NPO (IDSP), NCDC; Dr. Shubhangi Kulsange and Dr. Saurabh Goyal, Joint Directors at NCDC; Dr. Akash Srivastava, Additional Director and Head of NPCCHH; and Dr. Dilip Mavalankar, former Director of the Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar.

Officials from 20 Municipal Surveillance Units (MSUs) across the country participated in the workshop, making it a key platform for knowledge exchange and policy alignment on heatwave preparedness.
