Nagpur: In a significant move to strengthen the city’s long-term water security, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has revived the long-pending Kanhan-Kolar Barrage project and plans to seek financial assistance from the Central Government for its implementation. The initiative aims to reduce Nagpur’s heavy dependence on the Pench reservoir, which currently serves as the city’s primary drinking water source.

The proposed barrage on the Kanhan River, near its confluence with the Kolar River, is expected to create an additional and more reliable water source for the city. Civic officials believe the project will improve water availability, particularly during the summer months, while easing pressure on the Pench water supply system.

The project was originally proposed several years ago but remained on the back burner. With Nagpur’s growing population and increasing demand for drinking water, the civic body has now decided to push for its revival and secure central funding to accelerate execution.

Officials say diversifying water sources has become essential to ensure uninterrupted supply, especially in view of changing rainfall patterns and rising demand. Once completed, the Kanhan-Kolar Barrage is expected to strengthen Nagpur’s water infrastructure and reduce the city’s vulnerability to shortages linked to the Pench system.
