New Delhi: Concerns over online freedom of expression have resurfaced after several Facebook users claimed that posts critical of the government were either removed or their visibility was significantly reduced on the platform.
According to users, posts discussing political issues, governance, and public policies allegedly disappeared without prior notice or were flagged for violating community standards. Some users also reported temporary restrictions on their accounts after sharing or commenting on government-related content.
The claims have sparked debate on social media, with digital rights advocates calling for greater transparency in content moderation. They argue that users should receive clear explanations whenever content is removed or access to their accounts is limited.
At present, there is no public evidence confirming that the reported removals were carried out at the direction of the government. Content may be removed for various reasons, including violations of platform policies, automated moderation systems, or compliance with applicable legal requirements.
The issue has renewed discussions on balancing content moderation, legal compliance, and the protection of free expression on social media platforms. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, states that it enforces its Community Standards globally while also responding to valid legal requests where required.
