Nagpur: With polling for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) scheduled on January 15, the election machinery has outlined a simple, secure and time-efficient voting process for citizens to elect their civic representatives.
Voters are required to carry a valid photo identity card to their designated polling stations. On arrival, polling officials will verify the voter’s name in the electoral roll before applying indelible ink on one finger to prevent multiple voting. The voter will then be escorted to a screened voting compartment to ensure complete secrecy of the ballot.
Voting will be conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in accordance with the multi-member Prabhag system prescribed by the State Election Commission (SEC), Maharashtra. Each ward seat within a Prabhag is displayed separately on the EVM to facilitate accurate voting.
To assist voters, ward seats have been colour-coded on the EVMs: ‘A’ seat in white, ‘B’ in light pink, ‘C’ in light yellow, ‘D’ in light blue and ‘E’ in light green. Voters are advised to carefully identify their ward seat before casting their vote. Inside the booth, the voter must press the blue button next to the chosen candidate’s name and election symbol.
A confirming beep will be heard only after all ward-wise votes in a Prabhag are cast, indicating that the vote has been successfully recorded. There is no VVPAT or paper slip in this election. Once the beep is sounded, the vote is automatically locked and cannot be altered or cancelled, even in the event of an error.
Most Prabhags in Nagpur consist of four ward seats, requiring voters to cast four separate votes. However, Prabhag No. 38 is an exception, with only three wards. Voters from this Prabhag are urged to exercise extra caution, as only three ward options will appear on the EVM.
Election officials said the entire voting process typically takes less than two minutes, and a careful press followed by the confirmation beep ensures that every vote is securely recorded.
