Voting and results on August 11

Nagpur: It is for the first time that Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Contractors Welfare Association will be holding its open election on August 11, 2015 here in the city, to safeguard the interest of all contractors.

The election will be held in the presence of the election officer to be authorized by the Charity Commissioner, Nagpur. While NMC corporators as well as Ruling party members in the NMC are believed to be indirectly jumping into the fray, the main tussle is likely to be between two powerful groups, Ramzan group and Naidu group.

It may be mentioned that there are as many as 517 big and small contractors are registered with the NMC, and all of them are active contractors, but of them only 250 contractors are members of NMC Contractors Welfare Association, Nagpur. As per rule only these contractors can participate in the election.
Sources informed, the Naidu group has 80 members while Ramzan group has 170 members, all registered with NMC Contractors Welfare Association. The filing of papers will continue up to July 10, and the registered voters-list will be publicized on July 12. The final list, after corrections and amendments, etc, if any, will be publicized on July 15.

During July 26 to 29, the nominations for the post of president, vice president, general secretary, joint secretaries (2 posts), treasurer and five members of executive body will be invited. July 30 is fixed for withdrawal of nominations, and August 11 is fixed for voting as well as declaration of results. The Charity Commissioner Nagpur will soon announce the name of election officer to this effect.

It may be mentioned that the NMC contractors, particularly the small ones, were being neglected in terms of allotment of contract-work and other things, and several irregularities were going on unchecked including pressurization of NMC officials due to unnecessary use of influence by Naidu group. As it resulted in severe protest against Naidu group, the group, despite having a backing of ruling party, had to lose its weight.
This all gave rise to a need to go for election of registered association of contractors of NMC. Now, let us wait and watch the development in the election of the association on Aug 11.
