NEET retest held smoothly in Nagpur; students find paper tougher than May 3 exam

Nagpur: More than 12,000 medical aspirants appeared for the NEET-UG 2026 retest at 30 examination centres across Nagpur on Sunday, with authorities ensuring a smooth and incident-free conduct of the examination under an extensive security blanket. While candidates appreciated the arrangements, the question paper sparked mixed reactions, with a majority describing it as significantly tougher than the original examination held on May 3.

The only notable disruption was reported at Shivaji Science College (DNC), where two female candidates were denied entry after arriving beyond the prescribed reporting time. One student reached the centre three minutes after the gates closed at 1.30 pm, while another arrived around 2 pm. Since entry to examination centres had begun at 11 am, authorities strictly enforced the schedule, and both students were turned away. Sources said neither candidate could provide a convincing reason for the delay, leaving them visibly distressed.

The retest was conducted under unprecedented security measures. From the transportation of confidential examination material to surveillance at centres, the city police maintained a close watch throughout the day. Personnel were deployed from early morning and remained on duty until the completion of post-examination formalities.

Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal personally monitored the arrangements along with Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy. Three Additional Commissioners of Police, all Deputy Commissioners, senior inspectors and local police personnel were stationed across the city to oversee the process and prevent any irregularities.

To ensure the secure movement of question papers and confidential documents, the Traffic Police created green corridors for designated vehicles. Revenue officials and staff from various government departments also assisted in the large-scale operation. Following the examination, answer sheets and other sensitive material were collected and transported under heavy security. Sources indicated that the documents are likely to be flown to Delhi aboard a special Indian Air Force aircraft.

While security arrangements earned praise, the examination itself proved challenging for many candidates. Students reported that the Physics section was particularly difficult and time-consuming compared to the original test.

One candidate said Biology was relatively easy, but both Chemistry and Physics were lengthy and demanding. “The earlier paper allowed us to comfortably attempt most questions. This time, the paper was longer and more complex, especially Physics,” he said.

Several students echoed similar sentiments, describing Physics as the toughest section due to tricky numerical and conceptual questions. A nursing aspirant said Biology was the easiest part of the paper and helped her save time, while Physics consumed a significant portion of the examination duration.

Some candidates, however, felt the retest was more manageable than expected. One student said Biology boosted his confidence and that Chemistry, though lengthy, remained within reach.

Despite the successful conduct of the examination, resentment over the decision to hold a retest continued among a section of students. A candidate who requested anonymity described the paper as “quite difficult” and said she would have preferred the marks from the original examination to be considered instead.

Outside examination centres, parents expressed concern over the emotional strain faced by students who were required to undergo the high-stakes test once again. “The difference is visible on their faces,” said one parent. “After the first examination, students came out smiling and confident. This time, many looked exhausted and anxious. It is painful to watch them go through the stress and uncertainty all over again.”

As the retest concluded peacefully, attention now shifts to the evaluation process and the final outcome, with thousands of aspirants hoping that their second attempt will bring them closer to securing a coveted medical seat.
