Nagpur: What should have been just another examination day turned into an emotional test of resilience for 18-year-old Abdullah Mohammad Talib and his family. On Sunday morning, as thousands of students walked into NEET-UG retest centres across Nagpur, Abdullah’s arrival at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Ajni carried the weight of days filled with uncertainty, anxiety and heartbreak.
Just 24 hours earlier, the teenager had found himself at the centre of a controversy after his admit card allegedly listed Abu Dhabi as his examination centre instead of any of the Vidarbha cities he had opted for. The unexpected development left the aspiring doctor devastated and raised serious questions about how the overseas centre was allotted.
As Abdullah, wearing a face mask to avoid public attention, entered the examination hall after completing security formalities, emotions overwhelmed his father, Dr Talib, who broke down while interacting with journalists outside the centre.
“This examination is extremely important for his future. The last few days have been emotionally exhausting for our entire family,” he said, struggling to hold back tears.
According to the family, Abdullah was so distressed after seeing Abu Dhabi mentioned on his admit card that he initially refused to appear for the retest. His confidence, already shaken by the NEET paper leak controversy, suffered another severe blow.
“The shock was unbearable for him. He could not stop crying and had to be given medication to calm down. He completely lost faith and did not want to appear for the examination,” Dr Talib said.
The family’s efforts to encourage Abdullah became a round-the-clock mission. His mother reportedly fell ill after witnessing his emotional breakdown, while his elder brother, who lives in Ireland, and his sister in Mumbai repeatedly connected with him through video calls, urging him not to abandon his dream.
Even on the day of the examination, uncertainty lingered. According to Dr Talib, Abdullah finally agreed to appear for the test only around 10 am on Sunday after persistent persuasion from family members.
For Abdullah, medicine is more than a career choice. The teenager dreams of earning an MBBS degree and eventually pursuing postgraduate medical studies in the United Kingdom. His father believes that despite the setback, the examination marks a fresh beginning.
“Once the examination is over, we plan to take him on a short holiday. He needs time to recover mentally from everything he has gone through. We hope he regains his confidence and focuses on his future,” he said.
The family has, however, strongly disputed the National Testing Agency’s claim that Abu Dhabi was selected as an examination city in Abdullah’s profile. Dr Talib maintained that he personally filled out the application form along with his son at their home in February.
“When the portal reopened for city preferences, we selected Nagpur as the first choice, followed by Bhandara and Wardha. There was never any discussion about Abu Dhabi,” he said.
He further alleged that from June 14 onwards, they were repeatedly locked out of the account due to credential-related errors. “Every attempt to log in showed ‘wrong credentials’. When access was finally restored a couple of days ago, we were shocked to find Abu Dhabi listed on the admit card,” he claimed.
The family has demanded a detailed probe into the possibility of unauthorised access or manipulation of the account.
“My son does not even possess a passport. We have no relatives or connections in Abu Dhabi. That is why we want a thorough investigation into how such a change could have happened,” Dr Talib said.
While the examination may now be behind him, the episode has left a deep emotional impact on the young aspirant and his family. For Abdullah, Sunday was not merely about answering questions in an examination hall, it was about overcoming self-doubt, anxiety and a controversy that nearly derailed years of hard work and preparation.
