Nagpur: With the credibility of the country’s most important medical entrance examination under intense scrutiny following the cancellation of the original test over an alleged paper leak, the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday carried out a nationwide mock drill to ensure foolproof arrangements for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled on June 21.
The large-scale exercise was conducted across thousands of examination centres to assess preparedness, strengthen coordination among multiple agencies, and test the effectiveness of an unprecedented security framework designed to prevent any recurrence of malpractice.
Authorities have deployed an extensive security apparatus involving more than two lakh personnel, including police forces, district administration officials, invigilators, and security staff, making it one of the largest examination security operations ever undertaken in the country.
Officials said the re-examination will be conducted under a multi-layered surveillance and security system, with advanced technology playing a key role in safeguarding the integrity of the test. Every candidate will undergo Aadhaar-based biometric verification, while examination centres will remain under constant CCTV surveillance linked to central monitoring and control rooms.
In addition, question papers and answer sheets will be transported through GPS-enabled tracking systems, while candidates will be subjected to mandatory frisking using high-sensitivity metal detectors before entering examination halls.
The NTA has directed all candidates to report well in advance, warning that entry gates will be shut sharply at 1.30 pm. The examination will be conducted from 2 pm to 5.15 pm under enhanced monitoring protocols aimed at ensuring complete transparency and fairness.
The re-examination assumes enormous significance as it follows the cancellation of the May 3 NEET-UG examination after allegations of a question paper leak triggered nationwide outrage and raised serious concerns about the sanctity of the selection process for aspiring medical students.
To eliminate any possibility of irregularities, all examination centres have already been taken over by the NTA and will function under a three-tier security arrangement on examination day. Paramilitary forces have been entrusted with the custody and protection of question papers and answer booklets, while more than 5,000 examination centres across the country will remain under round-the-clock electronic and physical surveillance.
Officials said Saturday’s mock drill was crucial in evaluating response mechanisms, identifying potential vulnerabilities, and ensuring seamless coordination between the NTA, law enforcement agencies and district administrations before the high-stakes examination.
With lakhs of students pinning their hopes on the re-test, authorities maintain that the extraordinary security measures are intended not only to prevent malpractice but also to restore public confidence in a system that was shaken by the controversy surrounding the cancelled examination.
