Nagpur: A 27-year-old woman allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison after her boyfriend, whom she met through Instagram, allegedly refused to marry her despite having a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage.

The incident occurred on Monday in the Wadi police station area. The woman was found in an unconscious condition and was rushed to a private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

According to police, the accused has been identified as Prajjwal Ramkumar Mate (26), a resident of Khapa in Tumsar, Bhandara district. The woman and Mate reportedly became acquainted through Instagram. Their friendship subsequently developed into a romantic relationship.

The woman has alleged that Mate assured her that he would marry her and subsequently established a physical relationship with her.

According to the complaint, between September 8, 2025 and August 20, 2026, Mate allegedly took her to a hotel in Ramdaspeth, where he established a physical relationship with her after promising to marry her.

The situation reportedly deteriorated when the woman began insisting that he fulfil his promise and marry her. Mate allegedly refused, leading to repeated disputes between the two.

Distressed over the alleged betrayal, the woman consumed a poisonous substance on Monday. Her family members noticed foam coming from her mouth and immediately rushed her to a private hospital in the Wadi area.

Wadi police have registered a case concerning the woman’s suicide attempt, while Sitabuldi police have registered a separate case against Mate on the allegation of establishing a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage.

Police are investigating the allegations and circumstances leading to the suicide attempt.

Nagpur college student alleges rape on promise of marriage; man booked

A 21-year-old college student has accused a 26-year-old man of sexually exploiting her on the promise of marriage, following which Sitabuldi police have registered a case against him.

The accused has been identified as Raman Suresh Jadhav (26), a resident of Washim. The complainant is a college student from the Nandanvan area.

According to the complaint, the woman met Jadhav in Amravati in 2024, following which the two developed a relationship.

The woman has alleged that Jadhav promised to marry her and subsequently took her to different hotels in Nagpur in December 2025, where he allegedly established physical relations with her.

She further alleged that the accused and his family later began avoiding the issue of marriage and allegedly refused to proceed with the relationship.

According to the complaint, Jadhav’s sister also allegedly questioned the woman’s character and threatened her.

Following the complaint, Sitabuldi police registered a case against Jadhav and launched an investigation into the allegations.

Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the relationship, the alleged promise of marriage and the visits to various hotels as part of the probe.
