Nagpur: Nagpur police have cracked a house burglary in Mankapur within days by meticulously tracking the movement of the accused through footage from 50 to 60 CCTV cameras, despite his alleged efforts to avoid leaving a digital trail.

The accused, identified as Deepak Atarsingh Jharia, a resident of Seoni in Madhya Pradesh, allegedly stole gold ornaments and cash worth around Rs 6.64 lakh from a locked house in Baba Bagdadi Nagar.

According to police, the house belonged to Syed Muzaffar Ali, who had locked the premises and gone with his family to Awasthi Chowk to collect a shawarma parcel.

When the family returned after some time, they found the house ransacked. Gold ornaments, including a chain, mangalsutra, bangles and earrings, along with around Rs 60,000 in cash, were missing from a cupboard in the bedroom.

Police found that the sliding window had been damaged. Investigation revealed that the burglar had allegedly broken open the window and entered the house.

Mankapur police began examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Investigators scrutinised recordings from around 50 to 60 cameras, eventually establishing the suspect’s movements and identifying Jharia.

What particularly caught investigators’ attention was the alleged care taken by the accused to avoid electronic surveillance. Police said he did not carry or use a mobile phone or other electronic device during the burglary, apparently to prevent his location from being tracked.

Investigators also found that Jharia had allegedly travelled from Seoni to Nagpur by bus and used buses to reach the vicinity of the targeted house.

Despite these precautions, the extensive CCTV network ultimately exposed his movements. Police traced him to Seoni in Madhya Pradesh and arrested him.

Police have recovered stolen property worth approximately Rs 5.70 lakh from his possession.

The Mankapur police are conducting further investigation to determine whether Jharia was involved in other burglaries and whether anyone assisted him in the crime.

The case highlights how even a carefully planned burglary aimed at avoiding electronic tracking can be unravelled through coordinated CCTV analysis and ground-level investigation.
