Nagpur: The alleged illegal BPCL petrol pump in Wanjari Layout, North Nagpur, has taken a serious turn after fresh questions emerged over how an electricity connection was sanctioned despite the absence of mandatory approvals, including a Fire Department No Objection Certificate (NOC), sanctioned building plans, and other statutory permissions.
The issue has sparked concerns as the premises reportedly store highly inflammable petroleum products, raising serious questions about public safety and regulatory compliance.
Complainants have alleged that despite submitting repeated written complaints to various government departments, including Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), no on-site inspection or concrete action has been initiated so far. The alleged inaction has raised concerns over the role of the authorities responsible for granting the power connection.
According to a representation submitted by Janardan Moon, former corporator and Central President of the Civil Rights Protection Forum, the petrol pump building allegedly received an electricity connection without an approved building plan and without fulfilling mandatory fire safety requirements. The complaint claims that this has created a significant risk to the lives and safety of nearby residents.
The matter has now drawn the attention of both the District Collector’s Office and the Nagpur Police Commissioner’s Office. Sources said both offices have directed the concerned departments to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit their reports. Appropriate legal action is expected after the inquiry findings are examined.
The case has also raised key questions: If the petrol pump was operating without mandatory statutory approvals, who authorised the electricity connection, and on what basis was it sanctioned? Will accountability be fixed on the officials responsible if any irregularities are established?
The outcome of the official inquiry is now being closely watched across Nagpur.
