Nagpur: While residents in several parts of Nagpur are struggling with dry taps and waiting for water to flow into their homes, work has begun to lay a separate pipeline carrying clean water to keep the fountain at Futala Lake operational. The move has sparked an angry question among citizens: “Nagpur residents have no water, so why does the Futala Fountain need clean water?”
Silt and dirt accumulate in the water at Futala Lake. When the fountain is operated, the dirt gets lodged in its nozzles, causing it to stop working. To avoid this problem, preparations are now under way to supply clean water directly to the fountain. A separate pipeline is being laid and will be connected to the fountain.
Four Hours of Water for Residents, Clean Water for the Fountain
The decision has triggered anger among residents of the Futala area. While people in nearby settlements are struggling for drinking water, a separate arrangement is being made to supply clean water to the fountain, raising questions about the administration’s planning.

Residents fear that they currently receive water for four hours a day, but if water is diverted for the fountain tomorrow, those four hours could be reduced to two. With water already in short supply, citizens are concerned that using clean water for the fountain could affect the water supply available to the general public.
The Fountain or the Residents’ Water?
Futala is a tourist destination that adds to Nagpur’s beauty. Although measures are necessary to keep the fountain operational, the key question is whether using clean drinking water for it is justified.
Citizens are also asking why a drinking-water pipeline needs to be taken directly to the fountain when there are alternatives to treat the lake water and prevent dirt from entering the fountain’s nozzles. “When Nagpur is thirsty, what kind of development is this—to provide clean water to the Futala Fountain?” they ask. “There is no water in household taps, but why is a clean-water pipeline being laid for the fountain?” The administration now needs to answer these questions to the people of Nagpur.
