Nagpur: The Transport Department has intensified its school bus inspection drive to ensure the safe transportation of students. As many as 1,729 school buses were inspected in Nagpur city over the year. Violations of the Motor Vehicles Act and related rules were found in 277 vehicles. Various actions, including the issuance of e-challans, were taken against these vehicles.

During the inspections, officials checked school bus permits, valid certificates of fitness, insurance, fire extinguishers, fitness, the prescribed student capacity and the number of students travelling in the buses, along with several other safety criteria. Ten school buses were seized after serious deficiencies were found.
It also emerged that some buses were transporting students without valid certificates of fitness. The Transport Department took strict action against such vehicles. The permits and registrations of 44 school vehicles that failed to comply with the rules have been permanently cancelled.

Important changes have been made to the school bus regulations under the notification dated July 16, 2026. Accordingly, panic buttons, VLTDs (Vehicle Location Tracking Devices), CCTV systems, and fire detection and alert systems have been made mandatory in school buses. Vehicle operators have been given three months to install and implement these new safety systems.
Regional Transport Officer Kiran Bidkar said the safety of students was the department’s top priority. He clarified that action including e-challans, seizure and cancellation of permits against school buses violating the rules would continue in the future.
