Nagpur: The Railways has once again revised the completion timeline for the ambitious redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station, extending the deadline to March 2027, citing the complexities involved in executing large-scale construction at a fully operational, heritage railway station.

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Central Railway, Nagpur Division, Vinayak Garg, announced the extension while interacting with the media on Monday at his office, following a briefing by the Railway Minister on budgetary allocations for Central India and Maharashtra.

The project was earlier slated for completion by December 2026, but officials have opted for a cautious approach to avoid disruptions at the busy station. Garg explained that redevelopment work is being undertaken at a “live” station while also ensuring that the heritage character of the iconic station building remains intact, which has inevitably slowed progress.

Providing an update on Ajni Railway Station, the DRM said the redevelopment timeline has now been revised to October 2026, instead of the earlier target of completion by this summer. Ajni is being developed as a satellite station to Nagpur, with four new platforms coming up on the eastern side. Once operational, several trains will be diverted from Nagpur station to Ajni, significantly reducing congestion at the main terminus.

According to railway planning, trains operating towards Balharshah and Badnera are likely to originate or terminate at Ajni, a move expected to offer greater convenience to passengers and improve operational efficiency.

On the redevelopment of Nagpur station, Garg said the project also involves extensive yard remodelling, aimed at enhancing safety and creating capacity for improved passenger amenities in the future.

The DRM further informed that development work at Godhani Railway Station is progressing as planned. The station is being expanded to accommodate four platforms, including a home platform similar to Nagpur station, to strengthen suburban and regional rail connectivity.

On broader infrastructure upgrades, Garg noted that track capacity expansion across the division has been completed to a large extent. However, tunnelling work at Darakho for the third and fourth lines on the Nagpur–Itarsi route has slowed, primarily due to delays by the contractor.

He added that the Nagpur-Sewagram third and fourth line project is nearing completion and has already enhanced operational flexibility at several locations. Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has expressed confidence that the Nagpur-Nagbhir gauge conversion project will be completed by the end of 2026. Work in the forest stretch near Warora has gathered momentum, with the Railways keen to complete the project to improve connectivity for passengers in the interior regions of Vidarbha.
