Nagpur Railway Station climbs to new height of passenger facilities with style

The Central Railway adds a new chapter to its glory by commissioning the escalator on the west side of Nagpur Station. The work of commissioning of second escalator on East side (Santra Market side) is in progress and is likely to be completed by August 15, 2013. 

Nagpur News: The Nagpur Railway Station of the Great Indian Railways has climbed to a new height  of passenger facilities and added a fresh feather in its cap by commissioning the escalator on the west side of Nagpur Station today (may 31).  The technical sanction for provision of escalator was received by the Division in October’ 2012.  Civil Engineering and Electrical works related with commissioning of escalator were started in March 2013 and various components of escalator arrived on Nagpur station in April 2013.  The work of commissioning of escalator was completed in record time and extensive trials were conducted during the last week.  After successful trials and inspection, the escalator facility is being opened for Railway passengers today.  This is a major input in the passenger amenities at Nagpur station, a Central Railway press release said.

The Central Railway has provided the escalator with an approximate cost of Rs 50 lakh.  The vertical height of the escalator is 5.8 metres and the width is 1 metre.   There are 38 steps in this escalator which can carry total 100 passengers per minute with a speed of 0.5 metre per second.  Thus the distance from ground level to foot over bridge can be covered in 12 seconds only.  This escalator has been supplied by M/s  Johnson Lift Pvt. Ltd. and it can be operated for ascending as well as descending.

The Central Railway, however, has requested the passengers to take following precautions while using escalator:-

* Hold the handrails while ascending /descending firmly.

* Keep your feet away from edges of steps.

* Keep your feet within yellow lines.

* Hold children & elderly people firmly.

* Face the direction of travel.

* Move away from Escalator after reaching destination.

* Do not use bare feet.

* Wheel chair & heavy baggage are not permitted.

* Running on the steps may be dangerous.

* Avoid wearing loose garments and loose laces.

* Do not spill water or put any foreign objects on the Escalator.

* In case of Emergency Press “Red Emergency Stop Button”.

The above instructions are displayed near the Escalator.

The work of commissioning of second escalator on East side (Santra Market side ) is in progress and is likely to be  completed by August 15, 2013. Four more escalators have been sanctioned for Nagpur division and commissioning of these escalators is likely to be completed within next two years.  Apart from this, two lifts have been also sanctioned for Sewagram Station and work of installation of these lifts shall commence shortly.  This facility is being provided for convenience of large number of patients coming for medical treatment to Sewagram.

Thus commissioning of escalator today is an important and historical achievement for Nagpur Division in area of adding modern passenger amenities.

The escalator at Nagpur Station shall be available for use of the passengers from 6.00 am to 10:00 pm and shall remain closed from 10.00 pm to 06:00 am, the press note added.
