Nagpur: A shocking robbery incident has surfaced from the Hudkeshwar area of Nagpur, where a youth allegedly became the victim of a planned crime after offering a lift to a stranger out of goodwill. The accused reportedly threatened the victim with a knife, held him hostage and forced him to transfer money online before fleeing with cash.
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Hudkeshwar Police Station.
According to police sources, the complainant, Guddu Umarkar, a resident of Timki, was returning on his motorcycle via Umred Road on the afternoon of May 11 when an unidentified youth approached him seeking a lift. Believing the request to be genuine, Guddu allowed the stranger to sit on his bike.
However, moments after getting on the motorcycle, the accused allegedly pulled out a knife and pressed it against the victim’s back, threatening him and ordering him to drive towards an isolated area.
Police said the accused forced Guddu to ride towards a secluded spot near Chaudhary Farm House on Umred Road, where another accomplice was already waiting.
Once there, both accused allegedly intimidated and threatened the victim before forcibly taking control of his mobile phone. The accused then allegedly compelled Guddu to transfer Rs 29,000 online through Paytm. They also snatched Rs 1,000 in cash kept inside his wallet before fleeing from the spot.
Traumatised by the incident, the victim immediately approached Hudkeshwar Police Station and lodged a complaint.
Acting swiftly, police launched an investigation and succeeded in arresting one accused identified as Sheikh Rehan Sheikh Shakir. Police said efforts are underway to trace his accomplices and uncover whether the gang was involved in similar robbery incidents in the city.
Investigators are currently examining mobile transaction records, digital payment trails and the broader network linked to the accused.
The incident has once again raised concerns over crimes targeting unsuspecting commuters and highlighted the risks associated with offering lifts to strangers on isolated routes.
